“Ready … Set LEAP!” Tutoring & Motivation

Hope Community Resource Center reached out to the community by partnering up with Xavier University and Sovereign Hope by hosting a day of tutoring and fun in preparation for LEAP. HCRC girls started the day off with an exciting chant to show their enthusiasm for the day ahead of them. Students were split up into groups by grade level. The students who attend were in grades 2nd through 9th. Xavier students were assigned to a group. Male students were paired up with male tutors and mentors which was a great fit. The mentors helped the students with tutoring and tips for different types of math like Geometry and Algebra. Students stirred it up by asking multiple math-related questions to two teams. ELA activity students were reading grade-level texts and citing evidence from the text. They also gained vocal and reading skills.

Lunch was provided by Pizza Hut and Sovereign Hope. School supplies and prizes were also given by Sovereign Hope. Snacks provided by Kiwanis of Pontchartrain. We asked students how they felt about the upcoming LEAP test. They described their feelings as: prepared, scared, conflicted, ready, confident, anxious, excited, and reluctant. We talked to students and helped them work through their anxieties. At the end of the day, six Xavier University students did a cheer. HCRC boys ended the day with a chant and were ready prepared to take the leap tests.
